The Evolution of Real Grade: Why RG is the Golden Standard

When Bandai announced the Real Grade (RG) line in 2010 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Gunpla, the promise was astronomical: Master Grade and Perfect Grade levels of detail in the tiny 1/144 scale.
The early Result? A mixed bag. But today? It is the absolute golden standard of the hobby.
Let's look back at how the Real Grade line evolved into perfection.
The Early Days: Early Real Grade Syndrome (ERGS)
The first wave of RGs (kits like the RX-78-2, Zeta, and Freedom) heavily relied on the Advanced MS Joint system. This was an incredible manufacturing feat where fully articulated inner frames were injected onto a single runner. You simply cut the frame out, and the leg or arm was already pre-assembled.However, over time, builders discovered a fatal flaw: the joints were too tight out of the box, and after being posed a few times, the ABS plastic would wear down, resulting in incredibly floppy, fragile kits. The RG Zeta Gundam, with its complex 1/144 transformation, is notoriously dubbed a "hand grenade."
The Turning Point: RG Tallgeese & Sazabi
Around 2018, things changed drastically. Bandai realized the pre-molded MS Joints were holding the line back. Starting with the RG Tallgeese, Bandai drastically reduced the use of the pre-molded frames, opting instead to have builders construct the inner frames piece-by-piece using standard, sturdy PS plasticβjust like a mini Master Grade. Then came the RG Sazabi, which absolutely shattered builder expectations. It was massive, incredibly solid, featured expanding armor gimmicks, and possessed articulation that rivaled its Master Grade counterpart.
The Peak: Nu Gundam, Hi-Nu, and God Gundam
Following the success of the Sazabi, the RG Nu Gundam was released to universal acclaim. Bandai perfected the balance of armor separation, part count, and joint strength. This momentum led to the magnum opus of the line: the RG Hi-Nu Gundam. It is widely considered by the global community to be one of the greatest model kits ever produced by Bandai. Most recently, the RG God Gundam demonstrated articulation previously thought impossible, crossing its arms and performing martial arts poses flawlessly.
