The RX-78-2 is the face of the franchise. Being the most popular mobile suit, Bandai consistently uses it as the testbed for their newest, most advanced engineering technologies. Looking at the history of RX-78-2 kits is literally looking at the evolution of injection-molded plastics.

The 1980s: Glue and Single Colors

The original 1/144 scale RX-78-2 required plastic cement to assemble. It was molded in a single color of plastic, meaning total painting was mandatory if you wanted it to look anything like the anime. Articulation was limited to simple vertical shoulder and hip swings.

1990: High Grade and Snap-Fit

The 1990 High Grade RX-78-2 introduced a revolution: snap-fit assembly and multi-color injection molding. Builders no longer needed glue, and the major colors (red, blue, yellow, white) were accurately separated on the runners.

1995: The Master Grade Era

The MG line introduced 1/100 scale kits with highly detailed mechanical inner frames. You could now pull the armor panels off to reveal the working pistons and mechanics beneath.

2020: Entry Grade (Peak Accessibility)

The Entry Grade RX-78-2 redefined accessibility. It requires no nippers (parts pop off the runner cleanly by hand), no paint, and no stickers at all—even the yellow eyes are achieved through layered colored plastic.

2021: PG Unleashed (Peak Engineering)

The PG Unleashed represents the current pinnacle. It features metallic 3D stickers, photo-etched metal parts, complex LED systems, and an assembly process divided into distinct cinematic "phases."
