Matte vs. Gloss Topcoat: Which Finish is Right for Your Gunpla?

Topcoating is the final, crucial step in completing a Gunpla. It protects the plastic from UV yellowing, seals in your decals so they never peel, and dramatically alters the final look of the model.
The Ultra-Matte (Flat) Finish
This is the most popular choice for standard Gundams, Zakus, and military-style grunt suits. A matte clear coat completely removes the cheap, toy-like plastic shine. It diffuses light, making the armor look like heavy, painted metal. As a bonus, it hides minor sanding scratches and blends decal edges perfectly into the plastic. The Gloss Finish
Gloss coats are highly reflective and are typically reserved for specialized kits like the Qubeley, Sinanju, or the Sazabi, where you want to emulate a polished sports-car aesthetic. Gloss coats are also mandatory as a "prep layer" before applying panel line washes or water slide decals on painted kits. The Semi-Gloss (Satin) Finish
A great middle ground. It removes the cheap plastic shine but retains a subtle, realistic sheen, much like a freshly manufactured piece of industrial equipment.Pro Tip: Never spray topcoat when itβs raining or highly humid. Moisture trapped in the spray will cause a disastrous "frosting" effect, turning your beautiful clear coat cloudy and white!
